instrumental role in the community,
both as a meeting and social gathering
venue, as well as giving back to Mercer
Island by sponsoring the Mercer Island
fireworks celebration and several local
sports teams. Going to the Rowy has become a
rite of passage for younger Islanders when they
turn 21, as minors aren't allowed in the restaurant.
The night before Thanksgiving, when many college
students return to the Island, is one of the busiest
evenings of the year at the Roanoke. The slogan of
the Island's oldest business is "where friends meet
friends."You'll find food good at good prices here, as
others have for many years. A true island landmark.
Freshy's Seafood Market
This funky space (an old gas station) is further
proof that Mercer Island is open to the unusual
and in fact embraces these quirks—but only if
the concept is provable. In the case of Freshy's
Market it is provable—in spades. Owner/operator
Bryce Caldwell uses his many connections to
stock Freshy's 6 days a week with the freshest
sustainable seafood you can find. The Razor Clam
Chowder and Grilled Seafood Tacos are the stars
on the menu but solid featured players include
Fish n Chips, Po'Boy sandwiches, and salads
available with your choice of True Cod, Halibut,
Prawns, Oysters, Scallops, and Calamari. Choose
to dine in or al fresco on the picnic tables outside
or place a pick up order to take a bit of this
goodness home.
