Wier Park is another great West University Place neighborhood space, but on a smaller scale than Colonial and much of it for smaller people. Weir Park offers a gated toddler-sized set of playground equipment. The toddler area has AstroTurf —so it's nice and cushioned for little falls— as well as plenty of shade. The park offers low-to-the-ground slides and a small rock-climbing wall and the ever popular bucket-spinners. Kids can climb into these small, cup-like pods and spin round and round without you having to worry about them falling off or down. For the above 8 year old crowd Weir has lightened tennis courts and a basketball court. Jennie Elizabeth Hughes Park On the smaller/quieter side you find Jennie Elizabeth Hughes Park. The City of West University Place officially opened this park on in October 2018. The 15,000 square foot park includes a covered front porch entry at the corner of Sewanee and Pittsburg complete with a ceiling fan, recessed lighting, and rocking chairs looking out to a large open green space in the center of the park. In addition, the park features a dry stream bed with a button activated water feature, benches, log seats, picnic table, new trees, donor area, and beautiful landscaping enhancements. The park is equipped with unobtrusive lighting that takes advantage of natural features to make the park attractive even at night. In keeping with the quiet "home" feel of the neighborhood, the park perimeter includes an 8ft tall cedar fence and high profile vegetative screening. The park was made possible by a generous bequest from longtime West University Place resident Mr. James M. Hughes, who donated his property and $200,000 to be used for the design and development of a quiet park honoring his mother Jennie Elizabeth Hughes.
