Maple Staples Maple Staples Maples give us a lot to cheer about. As summer fades into fall, these magnificent trees pump up landscapes with the brilliant hues of an autumn sunset in their leaves. Tall Acer species, including sugar, black, silver, red and Norway—are iconic shade trees. These giants can reach 80 feet and need ample elbow room. Small maples— such as amur and Japanese—are compact choices for tight spaces, borders, and parking strips. Most maples are undemanding, as long as they are in a sunny site with good draining. Look for named varieties selected for fall foliage. Unnamed specimens are often seedling-grown and unpredictable; they might disappoint.
