A s the days grow shorter and temperatures drop, most flowers fade. But not chrysanthemums, popularly known as "mums." They actually prefer autumn weather. This hardy plant was first cultivated in China as a flowering herb and it was believed to have the power of life. Legend has it that the boiled roots were used as a headache remedy; young sprouts and petals were eaten in salads; and leaves were brewed for a festive drink. But what seems to really draw people to the mum today is its' variety of sizes and vibrant colors. Fall is of course mum's call to glory and decorating with this vibrant flower could not be easier. Mums are naturally a fall-blooming flower so they're physically responsive to short days and they will tolerate frost so they have extended longevity this time of year as opposed to other plants. the Word Mums originally gained popularity as a fall flower because they were one of the only options available, but even as it's become easy to buy exotic flowers at the supermarket all year round, tradition holds and mums are still the go-to fall flower. Try pairing mums with other flowers such as orange and yellow lilies, bittersweet and various types of wheat and grasses. In addition, football mums or decorative mums are often a good substitute for the more expense dahlia in an arrangement. Fall is here - enjoy some time with your mum. Mums
