Empowering Women in Nepal
The mounds of poverty, malnutrition,
illiteracy, social isolation and gender
inequality make Nepal one of the world's
poorest countries. Thanks to poor animal
breeding, milk shortages and loss of income,
the agriculture of Nepal is not sufficient
to meet the serious nutritional needs of
children, the elderly, and pregnant and
nursing women. Yet, change is on the
horizon. Your support helps Heifer organize,
train and equip Nepali women in 28 districts
to dramatically increase family income
through the production and sale of cow and
goat products. Our goal is a baseline family
income of 200,000 rupees (about $2,000)
a year, fortified by women-led farmer
cooperatives and women-led self help
groups that provide literacy, gender equity,
group savings and other opportunities.
Heifner has been in Nepal since 1993 and
the scope of this project is huge. Helping
138,000 women in 28 districts.
