It's been a long, dreary winter for most of the country, which gives us that much more of a reason to celebrate the return of spring. Of course, spring is about much more than just changing weather patterns. It represents the annual renewal of hope and life. It is the season of budding leaves and blooming flowers and of course it gives us that extra hour of sunlight that we in the Pacific Northwest so desire. Spring Forward This abundance of life should not be contained to just the out- doors. Spring is a great time to brighten up your indoor space: to shake off the cold and gloom of winter and bring new life into your home. To help you liven up your living quarters, here are some timely decorating tips for spring. 1. Bring foraged flowers into the home. If the weather conditions (or your back yard) don't allow for that, take a quick trip to your nearest market and bring home the bright- est bouquet for an instant pick-me-up. Ra- nunculus are in season for March and April as are Peonies. Add some succulents for a modern twist. If you have the room, a plant- er box can grow a variety of flowers and greens together. And an indoor tree, such as a fiddle-leaf fig, can give even a high-rise apartment the feel of a country courtyard. 2. Sometimes just changing the pillows in your living room will instantly refresh and update the look in a space: opt for colorful spring hues. 3. Use a colorful planter in your living room to brighten up a gloomy corner and plant fresh herbs in smaller pots in your kitchen: their fresh scent will lighten the whole room and you can add them to those crisp spring salads. 4. In your bathroom, replace dark colored towels with bright or patterned ones. Take this same idea into your bedroom with your throw pillows and sheets and you'll wake up refreshed. 5. Incorporate terrariums into your Spring mantra: these beautiful pieces will give the impression of small interior gardens and will liven an interior up instantly. Add a few whimsical figures to give your terrarium a twist. Met Market in Hawthorn Hills has a nice selection of both terrarium materials and a few figurines. Or try IKEA for cute in- expensive terrarium kits. Overall, just be creative and have fun with your spring decorating. You can't go wrong if you make it uniquely you.
