Peppermint Hot Chocolate There's nothing like a mug of hot chocolate to warm away that winter chill. But why not liven it up a bit? Lacing hot chocolate with peppermint candies gives it an instant holiday twist by adding something cool into the mix. Or go even more exotic with a Peppermint White Hot Chocolate. Either way, the pairing of rich hot chocolate and a wintry peppermint blast is sure to delight the holiday palate. Peppermint Hot Chocolate INGREDIENTS • 1 cup chilled heavy whipping cream, divided • 1 teaspoon plus 2 tablespoons sugar • 2 cups whole milk • 4 ounces bittersweet (preferably 60% cocoa) chocolate, coarsely chopped • 1/4 teaspoon peppermint extract • 4 small candy canes (for garnish) PREPARATION Beat 1/2 cup cream and 1 teaspoon sugar in bowl until soft peaks form. Cover; chill. Whisk 1/2 cup cream, 2 tablespoons sugar, and milk in medium saucepan over medium-high heat; bring to boil. Remove from heat. Add chocolate; whisk until smooth. Whisk in extract. Divide chocolate among mugs. Top with cream and garnish with candy canes. RECIPE BY Maria Helm Sinskey ~ Bon Appétit Peppermint White Hot Chocolate INGREDIENTS • 2/3 cup chilled whipping cream • 8 hard red-and-white-striped peppermint candies, coarsely crushed • 3 1/2 cups milk • 8 ounces good-quality white chocolate (such as Lindt or Baker's), chopped • 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract • Additional coarsely crushed peppermint candies PREPARATION Beat cream and 8 crushed candies in medium bowl until stiff peaks form. Cover and refrigerate whipped cream. Bring milk to simmer in heavy large saucepan over me- dium-high heat. Add white chocolate; whisk until melted and smooth. Bring to simmer, whisking constantly. Mix in peppermint extract. Ladle into 4 mugs. Top with dol- lops of whipped cream. Sprinkle with additional coarsely crushed candies and serve. ~ Epicurious Or take the easy way out - no one will ever know. Just add some peppermint sticks and whip cream.
