Nicki maison HIGHLANDS and frustration that I was not privy to. Even if it did (does) not affect me directly, it af- fects so many others. As a global society it affects us all. That naive girl from Utah grew a lot over the next 18 years while living in Los An- geles. Learning about cultures that were vastly different from what she knew in Utah and also an appreciation of differ- ent lifestyles and mind-sets. I am so lucky to have had this experience. It seemed far from "safe" to my mother as LA soon after experienced a 6.7 earthquake and other unpredictable occurrences, but to me, in my youth, I took flight as I explored this new- found view of the world. Eye opening would be an understatement. In this issue I bring a few of my observa- tions, a little decor and much appreciation for the times we are living in, as difficult as they may be. Documenting both the good and the bad in this era of technology. With advancements in navigation after 28 years, I am hopeful that we are also in a better place to plot a more direct route to equal- ity without feeling stuck, lost or confused as to where we are or how we got here. On top of it all we are mostly still home- bound—adding even more angst. While recognizing the heaviness of racial injus- tice, the real threat of a health pandemic, I find myself needing a few minutes a day to decompress just for a minute. It is my hope that this special double issue provides just that—a little break, a little inspiration and a little acknowledgement in our changing world. It's a fine balance.
