Nicki E arth Day founder Gaylord Nelson came up with the idea for a national day to focus on the environment after Nelson, then a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, witnessed the ravages of a massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California, in 1969. Each year on April 22nd Earth Day is celebrated around the world as a way to raise awareness on the negative impact our actions as mankind have on our environment and earth as a whole, and is a day for political action and civic participation. This year marks the 50th anniversary and gives an extra special reason to celebrate and bring about attention to the many things wrong and right with the earth. In this issue we'll highlight this day and offer suggestions to easily live a more sustainable existence to better Mother Earth and all living things. We'll also offer resources to get closer to (that often times) illusive down payment. It is more often than not the biggest hurdle that first time home buyers face, but this obstacle is not insurmountable. Learn how you too can reach your home ownership goals. Finally, we highlight Kirkland and all that this community has to offer. From a unique downtown waterfront (the only Eastside downtown frontage along Lake Washington's shoreline), to lively restaurants, art galleries and expansive, well maintained public parks. Read how the 6th largest city in King County (12th largest in Washington State) continues to inspire with its art filled, summer festival laden, watery vibe. Welcome Spring!
