H alloween is an exciting time. As kids, we got fired up about becoming our favorite cartoon characters and ransacking the neighborhood for all its mini chocolate bars, chip bags and rockets (with those nasty orange-paper-wrapped molasses bonbons hanging at the bottom of our pillowcases until all other options ran dry). As teenagers, we lived in Hallow's eve limbo, too aged to knock on doors for candy, frightfully embarrassed to dress up and pathetically unable to commit to any- thing but Batcave brooding. Now, as adults, Halloween is back in the form of baking! Start with either the chocolate chip blank canvas awaiting your inspirational creative energies or get into the diabolical mood with dark chocolate and candy corn cook- ies. No tricks here, only treats. Naked Chocolate Chip Cookies INGREDIENTS • 1 cup softened butter • 1 cup granulated sugar • 1 cup packed brown sugar • 2 medium eggs • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla • 3 cups all-purpose flour METHOD 1. Preheat oven to 350°F 2. Combine butter, granulated and brown sugar until creamy. Beat in eggs one at a time, then add vanilla. 3. Stir baking soda and salt in hot water and add to batter. 4. Stir in flour and chocolate chips. 5. Drop by spoonfuls onto ungreased cookie sheets. 6. Bake for 8-10 minutes.
