G
iven its woodsy, Pacific Northwest vibe, you
might be forgiven for thinking Woodinville
was named after the beautiful timberland that
surrounds it. But it's the Woodin family who
gave the town its name. The family arrived in
1871, making their way up the Squak Slough
(now called the Sammamish River) in a scow.
These homesteaders were the first white
settlers in the region, but the area along
Squak Slough had long been inhabited by
Native Americans, referred to by some as the
Simump tribe. For a fun day learning more about
Woodinville history, visit the Woodinville Heritage
Museum (14121 NE 171st Street), located in a 1931 classic
Dutch colonial house.
Today, Woodinville is thriving
suburb that still manages to
feel like an escape from the
big city with four districts
to explore: Hollywood, West
Valley, Warehouse, and
Downtown.
