G iven its woodsy, Pacific Northwest vibe, you might be forgiven for thinking Woodinville was named after the beautiful timberland that surrounds it. But it's the Woodin family who gave the town its name. The family arrived in 1871, making their way up the Squak Slough (now called the Sammamish River) in a scow. These homesteaders were the first white settlers in the region, but the area along Squak Slough had long been inhabited by Native Americans, referred to by some as the Simump tribe. For a fun day learning more about Woodinville history, visit the Woodinville Heritage Museum (14121 NE 171st Street), located in a 1931 classic Dutch colonial house.
