BUDDHIST MONKS ORIGINALLY CREATED ZEN GARDENS TO USE
as quiet places where they could meditate and contemplate, re-
flect and still their mind. Today the Zen garden can serve the same
purpose, or it can simply exist as a style statement. Zen gardens
often contain features such as flat areas of sand, pebbles or finely
crushed gravel; strategically placed stones or boulders; water fea-
tures like streams, fountains and waterfalls; and inspirational items
such as statues. Wooden bridges, paths lit with dim lights and native
plants, used sparingly and placed strategically, are other common
aspects of Zen gardens.
