Despite the fact that it rains most
of the year in Seattle, people just
like to get outside. There are many
reason to do so, and now with
Spring peeking through the clouds
why not explore some of Seattle's
greatest treasures? With the
research already done - it simply
could not be easier.
In October 2009, James Mitchell had an
idea and without resistance enlisted his
good friend Jackson Quall to join him.
Together over the next three years and
eight month the friends (who grew up in
Seattle) visited more than 330 local parks
and documented
their sojourns and
findings. They rode
their bicycles to
207 parks and were
able to include 187
friends, strangers
and animals along
the way. The result
of these adventures
Seattle Parks:
Reasons to Go
Outside
is a book titled Reasons To Go
Outside, A Seattle Parks Project.
The 256-page hardcover book details all
of their images with specifics on where
they were taken and provides insight
into what each of Seattle's spaces, big
and small, has to offer. The book also
features a brief history of Seattle park
pioneers. "I learned so much about the
park system and the history of the parks,"
Mitchell said. "It seems like Seattle has
one of the best systems in the nation."
Mitchell and Quall used this Seattle
Parks index as their reference point, but
skipped entries with very small acreage.
